I am excited to announce it is time to begin preparing for our 2019 UIL Meet. This year our meet will be Friday, December 6, 2019 at Callisburg Elementary School. The tryout process will begin soon! Below is a description of the events for the appropriate grade levels. Please talk with your child about these events and encourage them to sign-up and tryout. If your child makes a team the coach for that team will send home information and a practice schedule. Practices will be held after school. If you have any questions please let me know. Chess Puzzle - Grades 2-5 Chess competition is very different from tournament chess play. Contestants in a chess puzzle contest receive a paper-and-pencil test that includes a series of chess boards with pieces in particular positions. Questions are based on analysis of material or possible moves in each given diagram.
Storytelling – Grades 2 & 3 Children are read a story and retell it in their own words.
Oral Reading – Grades 4-5 Students choose a piece of literature to read aloud.
Spelling – Grades 3-5 Students study a list of words and write them during the competition.
Music Memory – Grades 2-5 Students will listen to approximately 20 seconds of up to 20 musical selections and identify the name of the major work, selection and the name of the composer.
Creative Writing – Grade 2 Students write a story using a picture prompt.
Ready Writing – Grades 3-5 Students write a story using a prompt.
Maps, Graphs, and Charts – Grades 5 Students complete a written test using a reference book to locate information, interpret legends and keys, make comparisons, etc.
Art – Grades 4 & 5 Students study different works of art and take a written test.
Dictionary Skills - Grades 5 Students answer written questions using a dictionary.
Listening – Grades 5 Students are read a story. Then they answer written questions.
Number sense - Grades 4 & 5 Students complete a written test using mental math.
Social Studies - Grade 5 Students are given 30 minutes to answer 40 questions from the Social Studies TEKS.
