Coach JD Sullivan


Coach JD Sullivan is entering his 2nd year as Head Basketball Coach at Ponder HS and his 30th year as a Head Basketball Coach in Texas (32nd overall). Coach Sullivan began his coaching career as a Football, Basketball, and Baseball Assistant at 6A Waxahachie in 1992 (1992 State Football Champions) and became the Head Basketball Coach at 4A La Grange in the Fall of 1994, 3A Electra in 1996, and 3A Olney in 1998. During his 14 years as the Head Basketball Coach at Olney HS, the Cubs compiled 362 wins, 10 District Championships, 4 District Runner-Ups, 2 trips to the Regional Finals, and one trip to the Final Four in Austin (2002). In the Fall of 2012, Coach Sullivan became the first Head Basketball Coach in the history of 5A College Station HS, where the Cougars compiled 212 wins including the only District Championship in school history (2019) with a record of 36-3. After 9 years at the helm in College Station, he accepted the Head Basketball position at 3A Abernathy and the Antelopes promptly advanced to the 2022 Region I Semi-Finals. In May of 2022, God opened the door to Ponder Basketball and Coach Sullivan excitedly joined the historic and basketball-rich program. 
After an undefeated District Championship (14-0), the 2022-2023 Ponder Lions entered the Texas State Playoffs and defeated Newman International Academy 76-26, Gunter 46-26, and #1 ranked, defending State Champion Dallas Madison 68-53 before falling to Hooks in the Region II 3A Regional Semi-Finals 52-50 on a last second shot in 2OT. 
Coach Sullivan has been married to his wife, Kristy, for 28 years and they have 2 sons. Jackson is 20 and Jace is 16
