Ponder ISD’s Counseling Department is kicking off September with a focus on helping students build strong relationships, develop healthy coping skills, and understand the importance of reaching out when they need support.
September is Suicide Prevention Month, and Ponder ISD counselors are reminding students and families that mental health matters at every age. Families are encouraged to check in with their children, listen without judgment, and keep conversations open. Students are also reminded that asking for help is a strength and that trusted adults are ready to listen and support them.
Building Respect and Leading With Purpose
Through CharacterStrong, students will focus on Respect, defined as seeing value in people and things by treating them with care.
The month's Ponder 44 focus also challenges students to lead with purpose by making eye contact when speaking to someone, choosing joy, and making a positive impact on others.
Students and families can also practice 5-Finger Breathing, a simple coping strategy designed to help the body slow down and reset when big feelings show up. Families are encouraged to ask questions such as, “What has been weighing on you lately?” and help students identify trusted adults they can turn to when things feel difficult.
PHS Hope Squad: Creating a Culture of Belonging
The September Counseling Connection also highlights the PHS Hope Squad, a school-based, peer-to-peer suicide prevention and mental health awareness program. This month, Hope Squad is celebrating Mrs. Morris for creating a space where students feel seen, supported, and encouraged. Her willingness to listen, guide, and lead by example continues to strengthen a culture of kindness and belonging at Ponder High School.
At Ponder ISD, taking care of one another is part of who we are. We encourage our families to continue checking in, listening, and reminding our students that they matter, they are not alone, and there is always someone ready to help.
