Ponder ISD’s Counseling Department is excited to welcome students and families to a new school year with the August edition of the Ponder Counseling Connection!
Throughout the year, Ponder ISD counselors are committed to supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of every student. The Counseling Connection provides families with helpful information, practical strategies, and simple ways to continue building strong connections at home.
August Character Strong Focus: Kindness
This month, students are focusing on Kindness through Character Strong. Across all ages, kindness means choosing words and actions that help others feel valued, respected, and included.
Families can continue the conversation at home by asking:
“What does kindness look like at your age?”
Students and families can then challenge themselves to find one intentional way to show kindness during the week.
Building the Ponder 44
Ponder ISD is also excited to continue building a strong culture through the Ponder 44, a districtwide focus that encourages students to become the best versions of themselves while developing 44 important attributes of a Ponder Lion.
Those attributes are centered around what it means to be a LION:
L – Leads with Purpose
I – Integrity in Character
O – Outstanding Communicator
N – Next Level Ready
S – Strength Through Resilience
These qualities help guide our students as they grow into confident, compassionate, and prepared Ponder Lions.
Strengthening Family Connections
Kindness begins with connection. Children who feel safe, seen, and valued are better able to extend those same feelings to others.
This month, families are encouraged to intentionally notice and name kindness when they see it.
A simple statement such as, “I noticed how you helped your sister without being asked. That was really kind,” can reinforce positive behavior while strengthening a child's sense of connection and belonging.
Small moments of encouragement can make a big difference!
A Coping Skill for Big Emotions
The beginning of a new school year can bring excitement, nervousness, and plenty of other big emotions. One simple strategy families can practice together is box breathing.
Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, breathe out for four, and hold for four. Repeat the cycle a few times to help calm the mind and body before stressful moments.
As we begin another great year in Ponder ISD, our counselors want every student to remember one important message:
You are smart, valuable, and capable!
Our Ponder ISD school counselors are here to partner with students, staff, and families throughout the year. Together, we can help every Ponder Lion feel connected, supported, and ready to grow.
Ponder Pride!
