Kristy Hathcock’s 7th Grade College and Career Exploration students at Ponder Junior High have spent the past three weeks discovering what it really takes to build a successful future—financially, academically, and as compassionate members of their community.
As part of their Budgeting for Success Project, students were challenged to step into adult shoes and make real-world financial decisions. They rented a home, purchased a vehicle, calculated gas mileage and expenses, created meal plans, shopped for groceries, and built a full monthly budget—adjusting their lifestyle choices to make the numbers work.
The learning was powerful… and often hilarious.
Students quickly realized the realities of adulthood:
“Wait, I thought towels came with the house. I swear I never see Mom buy towels!”
“Food is so expensive!!”
“Oh, now I understand why we can’t get a second car.”
“I’m going to have to find a better job!”
“Oooops, I guess I can’t afford to drive a Lamborghini.”
“Looks like I will need roommates.”
“Why is everything so expensive?!”
But the project didn’t stop at financial literacy. After finalizing their budgets, students entered the Philanthropy Phase, where they researched reputable charities and explored how giving can be incorporated into responsible financial planning.
This year, the experience became even more meaningful thanks to the Pacey Foundation, which awarded $1,000 to the PJH “Caring Hearts of Ponder.” Students were entrusted with allocating the funds to the charities they believed would make the greatest impact transforming classroom learning into real-world generosity.
Through this project, students didn’t just learn how to budget. They learned how to think critically, plan responsibly, and serve compassionately. Their decisions will directly support organizations helping people in need, proving that our students are not only future-ready. They’re community-ready.
Our Ponder Lions are truly Made for Greatness.
